Summary 2013

The Iberian transactional market is slowly recovering its M&A activity, in Spain and Portugal, and with good prospects for 2014. This year, the cross-border deals were particularly relevant, with several acquisitions by foreign-based acquirers in both countries.

Regarding Spain, the interest shown by foreign companies increased significantly. Highlights include Finnish and Brazilian companies, which did not complete any acquisitions in Spain last year. On the other hand, Ireland, Australia, Portugal, the United States and Canada-based acquirers increased their investments in Spain, in 2013.

Furthermore, Portugal faced its financial difficulties and this year carried several large transactions. Highlights include the merger agreement between Portugal Telecom and Brazil-based Oi, for EUR 10,74bn. In addition, the privatization wave continued; Portugal-based mail company CTT carried out an IPO.
