The Latin American market continues to show significant activity. In the third quarter of 2014, there was a 14.3% increase in the number of deals, compared with the same period last year, increasing from 414 in 2013 to 473 in 2014. The most active country in Latin America was Mexico, with a 45.3% increase, followed by Argentina with 23.8%, and Brazil with 19.4%.

Regarding the investment volume, there was also a generalized increase throughout all the countries in Latin America, due to the closure of relevant transactions in the high-end market in deal size (> USD 500m). Highlights include Abbot Laboratories’ acquisition of Chile-based CFR Pharmaceuticals, for USD 2.90bn. Furthermore, Telefónica Brasil reached an agreement to acquire Brazil-based GVT, for USD 9.97bn

In the cross-border sector this quarter, European and US-based companies were the most acquisitive in the Latin American market. European companies carried out 102 acquisitions, and US-based acquirers made 65 M&A investments. On the other hand, Latin American companies concentrated in Europe, North America and Asia, carrying out strategic acquisitions; specifically there were 11, 7, and one transaction registered, respectively.

The private equity sector was also dynamic between July and September. In fact there was a 48% increase in the number of deals registered, compared with the same period last year; a total of 43 deals, between investments and divestments. Regarding the investment volume, there was a significant increase. In the first nine months of 2014, the total volume generated was USD 11.76bn, compared with USD 11.58bn generated throughout the twelve months of 2013.

On the other hand, there were relevant deals recorded in the capital markets, but not has high as last year. There were seven IPOs registered in Latin America, so far this year, compared with 28 in the 12 months of 2013. Furthermore, 36 capital increases were recorded this year compared with 59 in the 12 months of 2013.
