In the second quarter of 2014, the Latin American transactional activity continued to decrease, as far as the number of deals registered. However, Mexico and Peru resisted this downward trend. Both countries increased the number of transactions recorded by 32% and 88%, respectively, compared with the same period last year.

The investment volume generated did not have such a considerable decrease; several significant deals recorded. US-based pharmaceutical company Abbott Laboratories reached an agreement to acquire a 72.62% stake in CFR Pharmaceuticals, a Chile-based Company in the same line of business. The deal value was USD 2.900m.

Overall, Brazil continues the trend set in previous months for being the most active, with 170 deals registered, followed by Mexico with 45 and Chile with 36. In addition, and so far this year, Brazil and Mexico continue as the most active, with 340 and 94 deals registered, respectively. In third place this quarter it was Argentina, with 77 transactions recorded.

In the cross-border sector, Latin American companies strengthened their acquisitions in Europe; 14 acquisitions registered in the old continent and only three in North America. On the other hand, there were several foreign acquisitions in Latin America. US-based acquirers registered 59 acquisitions and European companies made 57.

The private equity sector, although it registered a 30% decrease compared with the same period last year, the investment volume generated was significantly higher. It increased from USD 1,051m in the second quarter of 2013, compared with USD 4,129m this year.

On the other hand, the capital markets recovered its activity, with some relevant deals recorded. Highlights include Mexico-based Fibra Prologis’ IPO. The deal value was USD 664m.
