In the first quarter of 2014, the Brazilian transactional market registered 167 deals, both announced and closed, which represents a decrease of approximately 26% compared with the last quarter in 2013. The investment volume generated was approximately BRL 49,80bn, taking into account deals with registered values.

The Internet subsector was the most active this quarter, with 28 deals registered. And, it was the subsector which attracted most foreign investments; a total of seven transactions were registered. Highlights include investors from the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom. US-based acquirers were the most dynamic, with 30 acquisitions registered this quarter. Regarding Brazilian acquisitions abroad, investments were recorded in the following countries: China, Mexico, the United States, Argentina, Colombia, Germany, Indonesia, Oman and Uruguay.

The transactional market involving private equity firms was less active this quarter compared with the last one in 2013, with 15 deals registered. However, the investment volume was larger than in the last four quarters; approximately BRL 7,40bn were generated, taking into account deals with registered values. Regarding venture capital investments, 23 transactions were registered that generated approximately BRL 170m, taking into account deals with registered values.

There were no completed IPOs registered in the Brazilian capital markets sector. In 2013, ten IPOs were recorded, which generated BRL 17bn. Embratel Participações carried out a BRL 1,11bn capital increase. And, Itaúsa carried out a BRL 525m capital increase.
