In the first quarter of 2014, the investment volume generated by the Latin American transactional market increased with respect to the same period last year. This was a generalized increase registered in all the countries. The volume generated was USD 43.59bn, which implies an increase of 236.5% compared to the first quarter of 2013. Brazil generated USD 20.89bn, followed by Peru (USD 7.24bn) and Mexico (USD 5.37bn).

Regarding the number of deals, the activity was irregular among the different countries. The number of mergers and acquisitions increased in Argentina, Colombia and Mexico, and decreased in Brazil, Chile and Peru. On the other hand, Brazil continues to be the most active country, with 167 deals recorded; followed by Mexico (49) and Argentina (45).

In the cross-border sector, Latin America continues to draw the attention of foreign companies. Europe-based acquirers were the most active, with 73 acquisitions registered; followed by North America (61) and Asia (13). On the other hand, Latin American companies carried out strategic acquisitions abroad. A total of 11 transactions were registered in Europe and 5 in North America.

The private equity and venture capital funds were also particularly active this quarter, especially in the Internet and technology sectors; continuing the trend set last year.

In the capital markets sector, the activity was moderate. A total of three Initial Public Offerings were registered on the Peru Stock Market, as well as four capital increases: one in Argentina, two in Brazil and one in Colombia.
