SPAIN
In 2016, the Spanish transactional market registered 2,023 mergers and acquisitions with an aggregate value of EUR 111bn, entailing an increase of 1.86% in the number of transactions and of 10.16% in their value.
In sectorial terms, the most prominent sector in 2016 was real estate, with 514 transactions. A distant second was technology, with 195, Internet, with 160, and financial and insurance, with 157.
The period between 1 October and 31 December 2016 registered 551 transactions with an aggregate value of EUR 24.23bn, entailing a 0.36% increase in the number of transactions compared to 4Q15 and an 8.11% decrease in their value.
PORTUGAL
Portugal's merger and acquisition market registered 300 transactions in 2016, according to Transactional Track Record's annual report in partnership with Intralinks. 123 operations had their values disclosed and sum approximately € 12 billion, a reduction of 34% compared to the previous year. The real estate was the most dynamic subsector for the second consecutive year.
Since 2010, US-based companies were the most interested and active bidder in Portugal's market, although in 2016, Spain had stood out in the negotiations. The attractive businesses for foreign investors were in Technology and Real Estate segment.
The highlight deal of 4Q16 was the completion of the acquisition of the Ascendi Group's privately owned companies by the private equity firm Ardian for € 600 million.
