VdA M&A partner Cláudia da Cruz Almeida leads the year-to date TTR transactions ranking in Portugal followed by Morais Leitão partner Tomás Vaz Pinto

With almost €4 billion as total value of transactions to date this year, VdA M&A partner Cláudia da Cruz Almeida (pictured left) leads the M&A, Private Equity, Venture Capital and Asset acquisitions ranking of Transactional Tracking Record provided in its August Iberian report.

Cláudia da Cruz Almeida closed 5 transactions, amounting €1.3 billion on the buyer’s side and almost €2.5 billion on the seller’s side, totalling €3.8 billion so far. The VdA partner closed 2019 in the 6th position of the same ranking, which shows a great improvement of her performance. Cláudia Cruz de Almeida joined VdA in 1999 after graduating in Law from Universidade de Lisboa and made partner in 2014. As an M&A and Corporate Finance partner she has been involved in several transactions, mainly focused on acquisition finance, corporate finance and acquisitions and sales of companies. Cláudia has also advised several clients on securities-related matters and on securities market deals. She also co-leads this list by the number of deals, holding the number three on the TTR dealmakers ranking by number of deals (not published here)

The second position goes to Morais Leitão Corporate partner Tomás Vaz Pinto (pictured right), who is ranked at the same place he held in 2019 with a total of €2.4 billion, amounted in two transactions, with almost everything on the buyer’s side. He joined the firm in 1994 and became a partner in 2006. He coordinates the Corporate department.

Closely following Tomás Vaz Pinto is a list of six partners from Morais Leitão and VdA sitting in a tie for the third position with €2.4 billion, on the buyer´s side for Morais Leitão and on the seller´s for VdA.  These are the partners who were involved in one of the largest transaction in Portugal in 2020: the sale by José de Mello Group along with Arcus European Infrastructure Fund 1 of a combined 81.1% majority stake in Brisa – Auto-Estradas de Portugal S.A to a consortium comprised of three institutional investors,  APG, the National Pension Service of the Republic of Korea, and Swiss Life Asset Managers. In this deal, Morais Leitão advised the consortium with a team formed by partners Margarida Olazabal Cabral in Public Law and concessions, partner Filipe Lowndes Marques in Financial Law. The antitrust and competition team included partner Luis do Nascimento Ferreira. VdA advised José the Mello Group with a team led by M&A partner Cláudia Cruz Almeida (the number one on the list) including partners José Pedro Fazenda Martins, and  João Vieira de Almeida.

Morais Leitão and VdA continue to hold the three next positions with deals amounting from €1.1 to €1.8 billion.

In the seventh position, we find Cuatrecasas Corporate and M&A partner Mariana Norton dos Reis, in a tie with the same firm's Public Law partner Duarte Abecasis with €1,106 million corresponding to the same deal advised on the buyer´s side. Both partners were involved in advising Partners Group on Rovensa acquisition.

The eighth position is held by VdA partner and head of the Competition & EU practice Ricardo Bordalo Junqueiro with €932 million.

Two professional partners from Abreu Advogados close the top 10 list with Marta Romano de Castro and Rodrigo Formigal with total values around €900 million.
