In the first quarter of 2014, the Mexican M&A market was particularly active. The number of deals registered increased by 53,1% compared with the same period last year; 32 deals in 2013 compared with 49 this year. The investment volume also increased, generating USD 5,317m this year compared with USD 3,499m in the same period last year.

Regarding market segments, the smaller market in deal size (<100m) was the most active with some 14 deals registered. On the other hand, several significant deals were recorded in the high-end market (>500m). Highlights include the acquisition of Canada Bread made by Mexican company Grupo Bimbo, for USD 1.66bn.

In the cross-border sector, US-based acquirers were the most acquisitive in Mexico, with five deals recorded; followed by Brazil, France and Switzerland with two. On the other hand, Mexican companies continued to show their interest abroad, especially in North America, with three acquisitions registered; two in the United States and one in Canada.

This quarter, the private equity sector increased its activity by 27%, compared with the same period last year. Highlights include one of the most relevant deals recorded in the first three months of 2014. Switzerland-based Partners Group acquired a majority stake in Mexican oil company Fermaca, for USD 750m.

There were no registered deals in the capital markets sector, this quarter. However, according to experts, several important transactions could be recorded in the third quarter of this year.
