The Mexican Government reforms continue to encourage the transactional market. In the third quarter of 2014, the number of mergers and acquisitions increased by 63.8% compared with the previous quarter, and 45.3% with respect to the same period last year. In addition, a total of 173 deals were registered, so far this year. Two deals less than in the twelve months of 2013. In 2014 the transactional activity will surpass that of the previous year.

On the other hand, the investment volume decreased slightly, from USD 6,870m in the third quarter of 2013 to USD 6,700m in the same period this year. However, there were important deals recorded in the high-end market in deal size (> USD 500m). Highlights include the acquisition by US-based Crown Holdings of Mexico-based Empaque, for USD 1,225m.

Regarding sectors, the technology an Internet continue the trend set in previous months for being the most active in the last nine months. Highlights include the agreement made by Mexico-based Grupo Salinas to acquire a 50% stake in lusacell, a Mexico-based telecommunications operator, held by Televisa. The deal value was USD 717m.

In the cross-border sector, Spanish and US-based companies consolidated their position as the most acquisitive in the Mexican market. This quarter, a total of 13 deals were registered by US-based acquirers in Mexico, and five by Spanish companies. On the other hand, Mexican companies carried out three acquisitions in Spain and two in the United States.

This quarter, the private equity and venture capital sectors were particularly active. The number of deals registered in each segment increased by 75% and 218%, respectively, compared with the same period last year.

The capital markets was galvanized this quarter. Highlights include an IPO carried out by Grupo Hotelero Santa Fé, which corresponds to the second one so far this year. Furthermore, there were three capital increases recorded, carried out by Sare Holding, Fibra Macquarie and Terrafina.
